Regulation & Compliance

The rules are the part of dentistry that changes underneath you. This section tracks the regulatory and compliance developments that actually affect how a UK dental practice is run — from the professional regulator to the care inspectors, advertising codes and data obligations.

New here? Start with our complete guide: Dental Practice Compliance: the complete UK guide — the full map of who regulates a UK dental practice and what each body expects.

What this section covers

Dentistry is one of the most heavily regulated corners of UK healthcare, and the obligations rarely stand still. Our Regulation & Compliance coverage is written for the people who carry the risk — principals, practice managers and owners — rather than for policy specialists. We follow:

  • The General Dental Council (GDC) — registration, standards, scope of practice, and how you may advertise and present the practice.
  • The care regulators — the Care Quality Commission in England, and its counterparts in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Advertising and marketing rules — the ASA/CAP codes and GDC guidance that govern how treatments can be promoted to the public.
  • Information governance — data protection, patient records, retention and consent.
  • NHS contract and complaints rules — the compliance obligations attached to NHS provision and to handling patient complaints.

Why it matters

Compliance is the layer of practice management with the least room for error: a missed change can mean an enforcement issue, an inspection finding, or a marketing claim that has to be pulled. Our aim is not to alarm but to make the changes legible — what has actually changed, who it applies to, and what a practice needs to do about it — so compliance can be run as a maintained system rather than an annual panic.
